This basket is a strong UK fishing industry basketry design once used to measure the quantity of a catch of herring at the same time as unloading the fishing boats. It's a striking, almost iconic basketwork design of the British Isles, in which much history of the folk of our coastal community and auxiliary industries is intertwined. It took many years of hard work to learn how to make, as was not unusual in the long-gone large-scale basketmaking workshops that supplied the fishermen. This basket is made in peeled bare wood willow and has some split hazel rods and oak slats on the sides.
H 15.5" x W 21.5"
All baskets are handmade by John in small batches in his workshop in the market town of Lanark, UK, using only UK-grown willows.
