This basket is a strong UK fishing industry basketry design once used to measure the quantity of a catch of herring at the same time as unloading the fishing boats. It's a striking, almost iconic basketwork design of the British Isles, in which much history of the folk of our coastal community and auxiliary industries is intertwined. It took many years of hard work to learn how to make this basket. It is made using peeled bare wood willow and has some split hazel rods and oak slats on the sides. The base is made using an openwork weave, just like the sides.
H 15.5" x W 22" (c.18.5" to top of handles).
